SPECIAL EVENTS
HEritage DAy - May 24
Location: Homerooms (300, 301, 302, 303, 304)
Date: Friday, May 24, 2019
Time: 9:15am – 11:15
WHAT IS IT???: Heritage Day is a time to celebrate who we are and where we come from. The day will consist of talent or heritage presentations and a feast. Presentations in each homeroom will start at 9:15am on Friday, May 24. Parents are encouraged to attend, but due to space constraints, siblings are not invited. With food tables, space requirements for talent/heritage presentations, audience chairs, 20+ children, a teacher, guest faculty, and parents, the room will be very crowded.
HERITAGE /TALENT: Students are required to prepare a 1 - 3 minute presentation. The presentation can be a display of talent or it can be a creative way to tell something about their personal heritage. The presentation should be rehearsed at home. Students need to know what their presentation will be by Friday, May 17. Rehearsals will be held in homerooms during the week of May 20.
In past years, presentations have been incredibly creative and informative. Students have played drums, danced (ballet, jazz, and tap), played guitars and pianos (small, electronic), sang songs in foreign languages, painted portraits of a family grandparent, or painted landscapes near their home. Students have taught or demonstrated a folk dance, written poems, or told the story of a great-grandparent coming through Ellis Island. To enhance their presentations, students have worn traditional clothing, such as a sari or a Russian folk dress. Many students included a power point presentation or poster to share. Our class is diverse so we are looking forward to the diverse range of new or traditional presentations.
FOOD: Every student should bring a dish to share for a potluck lunch. The food should be a favorite from his/her family, tradition, or culture. We will be discussing food manners and how to try food from different places. Please do not send pizza or fast food. We are asking room parents to coordinate plates, napkins, cups, and beverages. We have no facilities to cool or heat food. If a dish needs a spoon/fork/knife for serving, please send that with the dish. Please label your food item so we know what we’re eating. Remember the NO NUT rule. We will eat around 10:45, after all the presentations. Students do not need to bring a lunch or plan to order hot lunch that day.
We look forward to seeing what this year’s group has to show us!
