About Writer's Workshop
Writer's Workshop enables students choice and independence as writers, while working within particular genres. Each writer's workshop starts with a mini-lesson focused a teaching students a writing strategy. Students then work independently on their writing, with a focus on the new strategy. Teachers confer with students during this time, providing individual feedback. Most classes end with students sharing their work for the day.
Throughout the year, students follow our writing process. They start with goal setting for the unit. They then brainstorm ideas for their writing and select one that they are passionate about. They move into drafting, followed by editing, revising, and publishing. Finally, they celebrate their work by sharing it with other students, and reflect on the degree to which they met their goals.
The following are the writing units for the year:
UNIT 1: Writing Workshop Launch
UNIT 2: Personal Narrative Writing
UNIT 3: Personal Essay
UNIT 4: Informational Report
UNIT 5: Persuasive Essay
UNIT 6: Literary Essay
